What does it mean to be vigilant? Firstly lets have a look at the dictionary says.
The websters dictionary gives this definition:
Circumspect; attentive to discover and avoid danger, or to provide for safety.
So the bible tells us to be vigilant according to 1 Peter 2; 8, Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
Being vigilant is also a criteria for those that want to be Bishops.
1 Timothy 3;2
A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
So how do we apply this to our lives as Christians? What do we need to be vigilant about?
There are so many things we need to be watchful about and make sure that they don’t slip. Below is a list of things we need to be watchful about:
Thank God that we have the Holy Spirit that guides us into all truth. He is the Spirit of truth and He will alert us when we need to make adjustments. This is one reason we need to remain sensitive to the Lord. Sometimes in our own natural self, potential harm may not be easy to pick up. This is why we need to yield to those warnings, unrest in our spirits. The Lord is speaking to us.
Being vigilant is requirement for all of us to live a successful Christian life. The world uses CCTV cameras to carry out surveillance. We have been given the spirit of truth that alerts us. Let’s stay sensitive to the Lord knowing that any warning is for our good.
