Growing Up Is for Our Own Good!

In the natural if you had a baby that did not grow naturally you would be concerned.

As Christians, the Lord does expect us to grow up!.

The Bible tells us to desire the sincere milk of the word that we may grow thereby (1 Peter 2: 2). In other words, the main factor of growth is to desire the sincere milk of the word. Note the word “word” not man’s doctrine or opinions of others but the word.

 The scripture also warns us not to be tossed about with every wind of doctrine. However, if you look closely the main victims of wind of doctrines are children. That is not to say that grown Christians not rooted and ground in Gods Word or who have not learnt to listen to the warning and prompting of the Holy Spirit cannot also be carried away with these winds, but the emphasis of this article is to no longer be children.

“That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive” (Ephesians 4: 14);

From the above scripture, it is children that get tossed to and fro.

The next verse in the scripture that we have just quoted above gives us the answer:

“ But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ” (Ephesians 4: 15):

The remedy is to grow up!.

Remaining a child has severe consequences. This is one reason why we have to disciple our young Christians. Discipleship programs are well needed and required for us to help the young Christians grow up.

The book of Corinthians gives us the insight of a child.
“ When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things” (1 Corinthians 13: 11).

From the above we can see that a child
  • Will speak as a child:
  • Understand as a child
  • Think as a child
Therefore, a child may not understand spiritual truths and can also lack discernment which can be costly. Wrong way is also a characteristic of childlikeness.

Therefore, it is for our own good that we grow up, if you lead a person to Christ, don’t leave them alone, give them some guidance how to be discipled. Find a good bible study group for them, or a group of other Christians that can help them, but don’t leave them on their own.

And for us that have been Christians for a while, let us take responsibility for our growing up in Him.
