![]() The things of God are spiritually discerned. Now the question is, how sharp is your discernment? 1 Corinthians 2: 14 – 15 Amplified Version But the natural [unbelieving] man does not accept the things [the teachings and revelations] of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness [absurd and illogical] to him; and he is incapable of understanding them, because they are spiritually discerned and appreciated, [and he is unqualified to judge spiritual matters]. 15 But the spiritual man [the spiritually mature Christian] judges all things [questions, examines and applies what the Holy Spirit reveals], yet is himself judged by no one [the unbeliever cannot judge and understand the believer’s spiritual nature]. It’s a privilege to be in a position to be able to spiritually discern the truth, as a lack of this can very costly.
Now let’s have a look at an account in the book of John. John 4: 6 to 11 Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.) Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? From the above account we can see that this woman did not discern whom she was talking to. According to verse 10, if this woman had discernment, she would have had an encounter with the Lord. Jesus told the woman, that she could of asked and He would have given her living water. That is exactly what she missed due to lack of discernment. Before we start throwing stones at this woman, how many God encounters have we missed due to lack of discernment? We get focused on carnal things, and forget that the real world is spiritual. How easy is it to go around our daily activities and lack spiritual discernment? We meet needy people every day and just walk pass them, some of them are hurting but we are too preoccupied with ourselves to pick it up. It’s a journey to have the eyes and ears of the Lord but it can be done. Let’s tune into the God Zone, and walk in the spirit so we can not only discern our times of visitation, but help a dying world around us. Bisi Oladipupo

Great article Bisi. Having the ability to discern is indeed a gift for us belivers designed to support our Christian walk. The lack of discernment isn’t because it’s not there but rather because we have not developed the gift of using it. I feel discernment involves training your spiritual ears and eyes to listen, see and act through feeding the spirit man with the word. That to me is a good starting point ... let’s not judge ( you are right saying don’t throw stones at the woman). I say don’t throw stones at yourself either ... recognise the issue and start doing something where you are ... reading and meditating on the word, listening to the spoken word, praying or interceding in a group or on your own etc. Making the word more accessible to our spirit man would make us more likely to use it in the first instance when the time comes to do so. Let’s be Practical and Hopeful. Like you said... it can be done😊
