![]() Colossians 3: 5 defines what idolatry is. “Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry” (Colossians 3: 5) From this scripture, we can see that covetousness is idolatry. The scripture does not say that it is like idolatry but it is idolatry. So what is covetousness? The English dictionary says that it is “A strong desire to have something especially something that belongs to someone else. . ![]() Dictionary.com says that covetousness is an eager or excessive desire especially for wealth or possession. In light of scripture, it is safe to say that covetousness is anything that takes the place of God. Any desire that takes the place of the Lord is idolatry. This is what we can call “modern day idolatry”. Today, many do not bow down physically to images, however in their heart, some things take a higher rank. According to scripture this is idolatry. The Lord must take first place in our hearts and in our lives. Our God is a jealous God ( Exodus 34: 14). “He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me” ( Matthew 10: 37). The Lord is not telling us not to love our family. God is a God of families, but the Lord must take the first place in our lives. For some it is leisure, social media, jobs, even ministry the list can go on. This is a heart issue, and allow the Holy Spirit to search your heart so we can make the necessary adjustments. If we want a close walk with the Lord, we must get rid of all idols. Bisi Oladipupo© 9th October 2023
