Our God has not changed and He is still jealous over us. Why? This is because He loves us so much He wants us to Himself alone, (Exodus 34;14, 1 Corinthians 10;22). It’s actually a beautiful place to be, fully and totally committed to the Lord. The old testament has several warnings about idols; ( Leviticus 19;4, 26;1), and while some parts of the world still have golden images and symbols that physically represent idols , the reality is that idols still exit everywhere. What do l mean?
An idol can be in a person’s heart. Ezekiel 14; 4 “ Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet; I the Lord will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols”; Tim Keller in his book “Counterfeit gods” defines an idol as “anything more important to you than God, anything that absorbs your heart and imagination more than God, and anything that you seek to give you what only God can give.” We also have warnings about idols in the new testament; ( 1 John 5: 21). So what are some of the modern day idols? Scripture says “gold and sliver” can be idols (Revelation 9; 20). Lets have a look at what “gold and silver” represent apart from images.
A vessel of sliver or gold in regards to people will always stand out. Yes we must honour men and women of God however we must be careful not to place them as idols in our hearts. In the book of Corinthians we are warned not to see people above that which is written. Therefore looking up to people can be an idol (1 Corinthians 4;6, 1 Corinthians 3;21). Or to put anyone first place in our lives before the Lord can be an idol. We do need to be very careful to ensure that nothing takes first place in our lives but the Lord. Let’s examine ourselves, and if we find anything/ anyone else is taking first place in our lives, lets repent and run to the only one who died for us, made us, knows us and at the end of the day really does care for us. So lets get rid of any idols in our lives and commit ourselves totally to the only one who died for us. Bisi Oladipupo

Bisi, this is so important. The bottom line is that we must be careful to not allow anything or anyone to displace God as being first in our life.
