What is a storm? I would define a storm as an unexpected interruption to the flow of things. This is particularly evident at sea. The boat is sailing nicely and all of a sudden a storm arises that threatens the safety of the boat and in some cases the life of those on board. We all go through storms in life. There are many reasons storms come along in life. Let’s have a look at scripture of some examples of storms and what happened at the end . Jonah Many of us know the account of Jonah in the bible. Jonah was trying to run away from what the Lord told him to do. He then joined himself to some sail men and because of Jonah the boat encountered a storm. When the men found out that Jonah was the cause of the storm, they threw Jonah into the sea and the sea stopped ragging. This is what l call a self-afflicted storm. Jonah 1; 15 “So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.”. We can see here in the case of Jonah that the storm was self-afflicted and arose because of his disobedience. The Lord in His mercy prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. In the belly of the fish, Jonah prayed and the Lord heard his prayer. Jonah was then given a second chance to obey the Lord’s instructions which turned out good for the people of Nineveh. We can see from this self-afflicted storm that Jonah came through alright. He cried unto the Lord and Jonah was given a second chance to fulfil what God called him to do. The full account can be found in the book of Jonah. Have you currently found yourself in a storm due to something you did wrong, or due to disobedience? The remedy is to repent and call upon the Lord. He is ever ready to give another chance. Paul Paul found himself in a storm due to a fault that was not his own. He had already warned the ship owners but they did not listen to him. Due to this, Paul found himself in a storm alongside others. Acts 27; 21 But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss. The Lord intervened and Paul and all those that sailed with him got to their desired destination. Paul’s assignment at the other side of the storm was fulfilled despite the interruption which was to be brought before Caesar (Acts 27; 23- 24). Our Lord is never caught unawares and He is every ready to save. Have you found yourself in a storm that is not your fault? Ask the Lord for help. He is an ever present help. He will deliver you and you will still end up doing what you need to do or go to where you need to go. Jesus and His disciples During the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ our Lord, He told the disciples “Let us go to the other side” but there arose a storm. Mark 4; 35- 40 And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side. 36 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships. 37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. 38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? 39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? Here we can see that Jesus Christ our Lord had already said “let us go to the other side” but there across a storm. At the name of Jesus Christ every knee shall bow. What has the Lord told you and a storm has across? Don’t let the storm stop you. Speak to it in the name that is above every name; seek direction from the Lord how to deal with the storm. Be rest assured that the storm is a temporary distraction and you are going to the other side. Just as Jesus Christ and His disciples arrived at the other side. Our God is a master planner and He is never caught unawares. He is more than able to calm any form of storm irrespective of the reason for the storm. God loves us and He is on our side. We just have to trust Him and seek Him for direction. We can see from the above examples that everyone got to the other side of the storm. Everyone had a testimony at the other side of the storm and so shall you. Just trust in the Lord. Our God is more than able to calm any storm. You will come out strong and give a testimony of the goodness of God. ©Bisi Oladipupo 20th Dec 2020

Thanks Bisi for this post. Storms can and do come in our life in a number of ways for a number of reasons. The good news is that the Lord is more than able to bring us on the other side if we trust Him.
