What really makes a person is the state of their heart.
If a person has a wise heart; the person will be wise and if a person is foolish at heart; the person will be foolish. Why is this? It is simply because everything starts from the heart. ![]()
The good news is that we can do something about our hearts. The scriptures tell us to apply our hearts unto understanding (Proverbs 2; 2) “So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding”.
If l was to apply paint to a wall l would have to be intentional about it. The same goes with us applying our hearts unto understanding. What we think about; what we say; what we expose ourselves to affects our hearts and this is why the bible says that we should “guard our hearts with all diligence” (Proverbs 4; 23). We believe with the heart. Proverbs 12; 8 reads “A man shall be commended according to his wisdom: but he that is of a perverse heart shall be despised. Once again you can see from the above verse that how a person’s heart is always affects their ways. If we want to change; we need to look closely at the information that we feed on and what is influencing us. Do any adjustments need to be made? This is why we need to apply our heart unto understanding and what influences our hearts. This is why we need to be mediating on God’s Word. Only you by the help of the Holy Spirit know the true state of your heart. But thank God we can do something about it. Proverbs 23; 12 “12 Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge”. What are you applying your heart to on a regular basis? As a man thinks in his heart; so is he ( Proverbs 23; 7). During the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ our Lord He made a statement about the heart. Jesus Christ said that what comes out of the heart is what we should be more concerned about (Matthew 5; 17 & 18). Guard what you think about. We have a choice about what to think about as a believer. There is a reason why the bible tells us what to think about (Philippians 4; 19). Guard what you expose your heart to. Let us look at a few scriptures that speak for themselves: Proverbs 14; 30 A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones. Proverbs 16; 9 A man's heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps. Proverbs 16; 21 The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning. Proverbs 22; 15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him. Are you going through a difficult time? Then marinate your heart in God’s Word and in His presence. Let’s us look at Proverbs 4; 23 in some other translations: The passion translation: So above all, guard the affections of your heart,[o] for they affect all that you are. Pay attention to the welfare of your innermost being, for from there flows the wellspring[p] of life. Amplified version Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life. As we can see from the above scriptures; indeed the issues of life are out of the heart and this is why we must be intentional on what influences our hearts!. Bisi Oladipupo © 29th April 2021

I love this! You have done such a good job explaining how to take care of our hearts and why it is important to do so. I never even realized how many scriptures are written about the heart. I am currently working on guarding my heart because I tend to give people too much benefit of the doubt and then end up hurt because I find out they aren’t the caring people I thought they were. I am learning not everyone is like me! Thanks for sharing. 🙏🏽💕

Bisi, in this post, you have made a compelling case on the importance of guarding our heart and being discreet about what we allow to find its way to our heart. The content of our heart is the essence of who we are.
