![]() The bible speaks about milk and strong meat. Let’s have a look at this scripture: Hebrews 5; 12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. 13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. 14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. ![]() 1 Corinthians 3; 1-2 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. 2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. Now looks deeper into the above: From the above scriptures; we can see that milk belongs to babes in Christ. The bible says that everyone (it doesn’t matter who the person is); that uses milk is “unskilful” in the word of righteousness. What is skill? A skill is a way of doing things, an ability to do something. To be skilful in the word of righteousness we need strong meat. It is also safe to say our spiritual growth is related to our spiritual diet. So why does milk belong to babes in Christ? Because milk is easy to digest, you just swallow it, but you have to chew meat. No effort is required. Your digestive system also has to be developed for you to eat meat. While to word “meat” here may not only necessarily be figurative of physical meat, it can be compared to any form of food that is not easy to digest. This can be confirmed from 1 Cor 3; 2 “I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. The bible here uses an interesting word “strong meat” (Hebrews 5; 12). Have you ever tried eating strong meat? You can’t just swallow it, you have to chew it. Strong meat takes longer to chew. Don’t spill out a teaching/ ministry because it delivers strong meat. Take it little by little ,chew on it until you are able to digest it and it becomes a reality in your life. If we want to grow, we need meat. These may not necessarily be “feel good messages” but will enhance us to have a deeper walk with the Lord. Have you been exposed to a ministry and you feel it’s too strong? You know that it is scriptural but you are having problems receiving it ? Ask the Lord to help you. Could it be that the Lord has greater heights for you and the Lord is now exposing you to teachings that have greater depth? Don’t spill it out of your mouth. Take it small by small. As time goes on, and as you grow, your capacity to receive will increase and you will see the great results!. Bisi Oladipupo

I like your instruction that strong meat takes longer to chew. If we want to grow, we need this meat. Not just feel good messages, but real deep ones that will help us grow. I have an infant grandson and this is very poignant since he is at the stage of needing only pure milk. I want to grow in my walk with the Lord.

I love how you talk about how it takes longer to chew..I haven't thought about this before when I read this passage. I like to call it chewing the cud...where I just go over things and think on them.

Hi MELISSA thanks for the comment. I particularly like the sentence " When I first started attending my church, it was hard for me to take in the strong meat. I was often offended. But, as I have grown and matured and as God has changed me" that is the truth for many but not always admitted. Sometimes we don't receive from a person or ministry because we need to grow up a bit more. It comes by line upon line, precept upon precept (Isaiah 28; 10). Very commendable that you have a church that still does in depth bible study. Thanks for stopping by.

Bisi; excellent post. Spiritual maturity is not happenstance. It does not come automatically with age. "Our spiritual growth is related to our diet."
